What is Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager is a free tool from Google which allows you to place and manage marketing tags on your website or app without changing your website code. If you are starting a blog or website you need to do tag management to better analyze and increase your website traffic.

Google Tag Manager can be used to install tags from Google Analytics, Google Ads, Facebook/Twitter Ads, etc. Also, you can use your custom HTML or tracking code to track any type of interaction on your website.

Google Tag Manager, when used with WordPress, helps us to track interactions like button clicks, video plays, scroll, and hover activities that are needed for analytics optimization on your website.

So, Google Tag Manager makes our life easy by saving the time needed to manually add code for different marketing activities.

How to Install Google Tag Manager in WordPress?

To start you need a live WordPress site with a Google Analytics account. You can use the Google Analytics tracking code in Google Tag Manager to set up Google Analytics tracking in WordPress. Below is a step-by-step Google Tag Manager tutorial for WordPress.

Step 1: Create Your Google Tag Manager Account

Go to the Google Tag Manager website and click the Sign-Up button. Next, you need to sign up with your Google account which uses Google Analytics for your WordPress site. Once this is done you will see a create account button on the website.

On the next screen add your information like Company name, Country, and Container Name (set this same as website name). A container is a collection of tags, triggers, and all other configurations on Google Tag Manager. Once this is done choose ‘web’ and click create.

Now accept Google Tag Manager terms for service. Once you get these proceed for further setup.

Once you accept these terms of service you will get a pop-up with ‘code snippets’ to install Google Tag Manager on your website. Two codes needed to be added to the head (inside <head > section) and in the <body > section on your website.

Step 2: Adding the Google Tag Manager Code to your WordPress website

Now to add this code to your WordPress website. Login to your WordPress dashboard and then install the free-to-use Insert Header and Footers plugin. After activation, go to Settings » Insert Headers and Footers page.

Now add the first code of Google Tag Manager to the first box (scripts in the header) of this plugin and the second code to the second box (Scripts in Footer) on this plugin. Click on save after adding both codes.

Now you have installed Google Tag Manager on your WordPress site. With the help of Google Tag Manager, you can easily create tags and install any tracking code on your WordPress website.
