How to use the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool for Keyword Research?
Before you learn Semrush Keyword Magic Tool. You need to have an account with Semrush. You can use this link to get 7 day free trial of Semrush Pro.
Choose a seed keyword
You can find this Keyword Research Tool in your Semrush user panel by going to ‘Keyword Analytics->Keyword Magic Tool as you can see in the image below:

The first step in using this tool is to choose a keyword that acts as a seed to generate a list of related keyword ideas. For example, If I am thinking to write an article for my blog on “website builders” like ‘best website builder for WordPress’ etc.
I have chosen my country as the ‘United States (US) because I want to research keywords targeted for this location. You can choose another location as per your preference. I will enter this as my seed keyword to generate keyword ideas as you can see in the image below.

When you click on the green “search” button you will see the results below. This shows the main table which has a list of related keywords as per your seed keyword. On the left side, you can see a group of keywords that can be used to include more terms in your seed keyword and find more opportunities.

Set Match Modifiers
While using this tool for keyword research you can see match modifiers that help you to get more specific results for your seed keyword. These are Broad Match, Phrase Match, Exact Match, or Related. This can be seen below:

- Broad Match: This is the default setting when you view this report. This will show you all keyword ideas in all their forms, without any order
- Phrase Match: Provides keywords in the same form as the seed keyword but various orders. Variations of your seed keyword (-ing, -ed, -s, etc) are excluded from the results
- Exact Match: Shows keyword ideas in the same form and exact order as the seed keyword
- Related: Returns keywords that are determined to be related to your seed keyword based on having similar search engine results
Filter by Questions: Another way to filter out keywords is by questions. If you hit the questions tab you will see keywords in the form of a question. For our example, the seed keyword is “website builder” as we get questions as below.
For example, questions: ‘how to choose cheap WordPress hosting for your blog’; ‘how to build a WordPress website’ are useful to add content around creating a WordPress website. These help to boost SEO efforts. When you target questions and include those questions with answers in your article you are providing a direct answer. This has huge significance as it drives very targeted traffic to your blog post.

Use Keyword Groups
In the images above you have seen that the left menu has the suggested group of related topics. These groups are used to explore the subtopics around your main keywords.
The groups can be ordered based on the number of keywords or the average monthly search volume of keywords. To see the total search volume of a group you need to select “By Volume”. The default setting is “By number”. To hide a group, use the eye icon beside the group name.
These advanced filters help you in deciding the niche-related keywords when you are running your PPC campaigns. For our example of a “website builder”. If we want to target people looking for a “website builder for WordPress” we can use the filter with the word “WordPress” in it.
We can use the phrase match modifier here as we want to get keywords containing “website builder” and “WordPress” terms in them.
You can see this below I have clicked on the “WordPress” word on the left side of the panel. Now, we can get a good amount of keywords with a decent search volume. For example: “WordPress website builder”, “WordPress free website builder” etc. Group WordPress has 461 keywords with a total average monthly volume of 6,810.

Use SERP Features
The Keyword Magic Tool has SERP features like a Featured snippet, Reviews, FAQs, Flights, and more. As you can see below. If you have an authoritative website then chances are that your content is chosen to appear in a Featured Snippet result. You can look for these targets by adding filters for the specific Knowledge Graph results you are targeting for.

Multiple SERP features can be added at the same time to look for keywords that are triggering more than one result on their SERP. As an example, the same keywords can trigger a featured video result in addition to regular video results. Also, the same keyword can trigger both Review and Local Pack results on the SERP.
For beginners, it is better to exclude SERP features because the result pages with no SERP features can be easier to compete and rank for. To filter keywords with no SERP Feature, you can use the “none” option in the SERP Feature filter as below:

Pro Tip for Keyword Research
Using the above methods you will be able to narrow down your keyword research and find profitable keywords for your SEO or PPC campaigns. However, I use a further filtering option which is based on keyword difficulty.
Keyword Difficulty (KD%) is a metric that is calculated from a 0 to 100 percent scale. The more the percentage the more difficult it becomes to rank for that keyword. Semrush calculates this data based on the authority of the domain appearing on the results page. It then estimates how difficult it is to rank for those keywords for a new website.
I choose a keyword difficulty of under 80% to keep the competition less. If you have started a very new website keep it low to less than 60% and gradually increase the percentage as your website grows. You can target more than 80% KD% at later stages when you gain authority on Google.
For this example, I have filtered the keywords for the authority of 30% to 60% which is good for a new website. I get 423 keywords with a total monthly volume of 22,440, Average KD = 53.39% which is good to target as you can see below.

Export keywords Data
Once you have identified the keywords to target for your SEO/SEM campaign. You can select them by checking the boxes next to each keyword. Now, you can export them to Keyword Manager within Semrush as a list or outside as an excel spreadsheet.
As you can see below I can export the keywords to a spreadsheet or inside the Keyword Manager. Now, I can use these keywords to create my SEO article or run a PPC campaign.
